Paper and Wire

The frame came first. The woman, who gave her name as Ilse and nothing else, bent the wire with her bare fingers as if it were warm, and it took Mara three tries and a cut thumb to bend one ring that did not sag.

"Slower," Ilse said. "The wire remembers hurry."

They worked until the noodle cart closed and the boy had gone home and the canal had the particular silence of water that has stopped being looked at. By then Mara had four rings and a spine, and the beginning of a shape she recognised.

"It's the same as yours," she said.

"It's the same as everyone's," Ilse said. "The frame is not the part that matters."

She unrolled the paper. It was not white. Mara had assumed, for eleven years, that the paper was white and had aged well. Up close it was the colour of the inside of a shell, and when Ilse held it to the tall lantern the light went through it and came out the other side slightly changed, as if it had been told something on the way.

"Where does it come from?" Mara asked.

Ilse folded the first panel before she answered, and when she did answer it was not to the question.

"Tomorrow the river goes dark," she said. "Bring the one you make. We'll see if it flickers."
